What Is Alyssa’s Law?
On February 14, 2018, 17 students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida lost their precious lives, and 17 more were wounded in one of the most tragic school shootings in history. Among the victims was 14-year-old Alyssa Alhadeff. This tragic event led to the creation of “Alyssa’s Law.” This legislation is a result of an investigation that cited “insufficient response times” from responders as a significant factor to the fatalities that day and that in-place emergency response systems, to speed first responders to the scene of an emergency like this, was found terribly lacking.
Alyssa’s Law takes a preventative measure against potentially violent threats, by mandating that public elementary and secondary school buildings be equipped with warning lights and silent panic alarms (or alternative emergency mechanisms approved by The Department of Education) that directly notify law enforcement in case of an emergency.
because time equals life.
According to the ‘Make Our Schools Safe’ website, a nonprofit championing the law:
Alyssa’s Law is critical legislation addressing the issue of law enforcement response time when a life-threatening emergency occurs, because time equals life. The law calls for the installation of silent panic alarms that are directly linked to law enforcement, so in case of any emergency, they will get on the scene as quickly as possible, take down a threat and triage any victims.
