On March 27th, 2023 an assailant forced their way into the Covenant School and released 152 rounds from an assault rifle throughout the school. The actions resulted in three children and three adults being fatally injured. The event has shaken the nation and has caused a deep societal self-reflection once again at these tragedies that have become routine.
By most accounts, the school had the security basics covered. Locked doors, cameras, access control. Nonetheless, at 10:10am on the morning of the event the assailant shot through the glass of the front door of the school. Three minutes later, the Nashville Police Department received a call stating that a gunman had entered the school. The Nashville Police Department arrived at the school at 10:21am and six minutes later the gunman was declared dead. Law enforcement followed their training and went to the gunfire and ended the situation.
In these situations, the most critical factor is time. From the beginning of the ordeal to the end was seventeen minutes of uncertainty.
Where could have minute the two main goals of an emergency response system is to 1. Get the good guys there and 2. Inform the people in the situation so they can initiate their procedures to buy time until law enforcement can arrive.
Our hearts go out to the victims, the families, and those who are affected both personally and regionally by the attack.
